Tufa casting is an ancient method used by Native American artisans, particularly the Navajo, to create intricate and detailed sterling silver pieces. The process begins with carving designs into tufa, a soft, porous volcanic stone. This stone is chosen for its unique ability to capture fine details when shaped. Once the design is carved, sterling silver is poured into the mold. The porous texture of the tufa leaves a distinctive, natural pattern on the silver, giving each piece a rugged, organic quality that reflects both the stone and the artisan's craftsmanship. The technique requires a delicate balance of skill and patience. What makes tufa casting especially unique is that the tufa mold breaks apart when the mold is opened, meaning that each casting is a one-of-a-kind piece.
I have great respect and admiration for Native American culture, and I approach my work with a deep sense of reverence for its traditions and history. I draw inspiration from the symbols and storytelling, while ensuring my designs honor and reflect the craftsmanship passed down through generations.
However, as someone of French origin, I also infuse my creations with my own cultural influence. I incorporate a touch of French flair into each piece. This fusion of Native American techniques and French design sensibilities results in a unique and contemporary interpretation of traditional tufa casting, creating one-of-a-kind pieces that honor both cultures.
